New Books Lead to Literacy
Hooked on Books provides classrooms with new, high-quality books, which encourages literacy and learning. We currently work with four schools that have insufficient resources to purchase and stock appropriate books that help students develop more advanced skills and concepts. Our program helps to fill this gap. (Refer to our Annual Report for a list of our partners.)
This program also supplies books to Parents as Teachers, an early childhood support program that serves families from pregnancy until their children enter kindergarten. Additionally, Hooked on Books provides new books for each child who participates in our Operation School Bell program.
How it Works
The chapter’s community business partner is Mostly Books, a local bookstore. School personnel are given a budget from Assistance League to shop there for age-appropriate, curriculum-applicable materials. The school personnel select materials to meet the specific needs of their students, including refugees, English Language Learners, emotionally challenged youth, and other diverse populations.
